Leicester City Council is looking for a qualified and experienced Best Interest Assessor (BIA) to join the DoLS Team within Adult Social Care.
This role involves a blend of assessment work and duty functions. You will be expected to undertake Mental Capacity and Best Interest Assessments, coordinate the DoLS assessment process, and support the team on duty one day per week. This is a hybrid position, predominantly home-based, with occasional office attendance required.
Key Responsibilities:
Undertake Best Interest Assessments under the Mental Capacity Act 2005
Complete DoLS reviews and assessments across Leicester and Leicestershire
Provide effective safeguards under DoLS legislation in line with Article 5 of the ECHR
Participate in the BIA duty rota (1 day per week), responding to emails and calls
Co-ordinate assessment processes within statutory timescales
Offer expert advice and guidance to partner agencies and colleagues
Ensure effective multi-agency working, including supporting training needs of BIA candidates
Workload Expectations:
New cases: 2 brand new assessments per week (plus duty)
Repeat cases: 3-5 per week if assessments have previously been completed
Home-based working for both assessments and duty work, with flexibility to attend the office as needed
Essential Requirements:
Qualified Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Nurse, or similar with Social Work England or equivalent professional registration
Hold a Best Interest Assessor qualification (DoLS)
Minimum of 2-3 years' recent full-time experience as a BIA/DoLS Assessor
Up-to-date with mandatory BIA refresher training
Strong knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act, and relevant Codes of Practice
Proven experience assessing complex needs in adult social care
Ability to travel across Leicester and Leicestershire to complete assessments
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and IT literacy
Local or regional candidates preferred, or those willing to travel
This is a full-time role (37 hours/week), Monday to Friday
Mileage is claimable from the office base to assessment locations only
