Job description
I am working with a Ministerial Department based in Westminster who are looking for a number of experienced Press Officers to join their exciting newsroom.
The roles are full time, to start ASAP and paying £221 PAYE or £296 Umbrella per day. The roles are in scope of IR35.
We are seeking talented press officers with the flair and enthusiasm to join one of Whitehall's most high-profile departments.
This Ministerial Department is never far from the headlines - with our work to keep the UK safe covering everything from counter-terrorism, to securing the border and combatting domestic abuse.
Their press office has the buzz of a busy newsroom, handling dozens of media calls a day while developing proactive and creative opportunities to promote the varied work of the department.
This role will be responsible for delivering proactive and reactive media-handling and PR activity in support of key EU exit-related policy areas.
Deliverables for the engagement:
1. Organising Ministerial interviews and media opportunities around announcements, visits, speeches and events.
2. Providing timely proactive and reactive media handling advice to Ministers and senior policy officials.
3. Skilfully and effectively briefing journalists, with accuracy and authority.
4. Working closely with Ministers' private offices, officials and communications colleagues to plan and implement media strategies across a broad range of media outlets including specialist, lifestyle, online and other new media.
5. Strategically planning communications activity across all disciplines to maximise our impact.
6. Developing an understanding of issues across the department to enable you to play an effective part in the wider press office team.
Skills and knowledge required
1. An excellent news sense in terms of anticipating stories and coming up with media plans that will engage journalists.
2. A proven track record of working on proactive announcements, launches and campaigns.
3. A talent in developing and nurturing excellent contacts with the media and external stakeholders.
4. Good writing skills - you can turn around clean, crisp copy in plain English to tight deadlines
5. Good oral communications skills combined with the confidence to deal with people at all levels.
6. The confidence and skills to quickly get to grips with our agenda and build knowledge of our organisation.
7. Ability to persuade others of the benefits of your recommendations or negotiate with others.
8. An awareness of political context in making communications choices.
Qualifications and Experience required:
1. Educated to degree level and/or a relevant professional qualification.
2. Public sector experience, either in local or central government.
