Leicester City Council Adult Social Care is seeking a Qualified Best Interest Assessor to join their DoLS Team for an initial 3-6 months. This role requires a Qualified Social Worker who holds a BIA qualification under the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
The role will primarily involve undertaking Mental Capacity and Best Interest Assessments, co-ordinating the assessment process, and undertaking DoLS reviews. Additionally, the successful candidate will be part of the BIA Duty rota (one day per week), responding to telephone calls and email enquiries.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct high-quality Mental Capacity and Best Interest Assessments in compliance with statutory requirements.
Undertake two brand-new assessments per week and provide support on duty or three to five assessments per week if experienced.
Coordinate the DoLS assessment process within statutory timescales, ensuring compliance with Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Recognise and address safeguarding concerns, acting in line with local and national policies.
Provide expert advice to ensure a multi-agency approach to DoLS, including supporting and training Best Interest Assessor candidates.
Office-based initially until IT equipment is provided for home-working. Attendance at the office will only be required for meetings or IT connectivity issues.
Conduct visits for assessments throughout Leicester and Leicestershire (mileage claims from office base to assessment locations).
What You'll Need
Qualified Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, or Nurse (Degree-level qualification such as CQSW, DipSW, or equivalent).
Current registration with the relevant professional body.
BIA Qualification under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and evidence of practising as a BIA within the last two years.
Completion of mandatory annual refresher training.
Strong understanding of Mental Capacity Act 2005, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), and the interface with the Mental Health Act.
Experience in assessing complex needs in adults and working within Adult Social Care or Healthcare.
Excellent communication, administration, and IT skills for report writing and case management.
Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage priorities, and work independently.
Knowledge of partnership agencies and experience in multi-agency collaboration.
Driving licence and access to a vehicle for completing assessments (local to Leicester City/Leicestershire or willingness to travel).
Additional Information
The role is primarily home-based, except for meetings or IT issues requiring office presence.
Duty function can be performed remotely but candidates can choose to work from the office if preferred.
