We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Best Interest Assessor to join our team on a full-time basis in Leicester. As a Best Interest Assessor, you will be responsible for conducting assessments to determine the best interests of vulnerable individuals who lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves.
Key responsibilities and duties:
Conducting thorough assessments in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and relevant legislation. Engaging with service users, their families, and relevant professionals to gather information and perspectives. Preparing detailed reports outlining assessment findings and recommendations. Attending meetings and case conferences to present assessment outcomes and provide expert advice. Ensuring assessments are completed within specified timeframes and maintaining accurate records.Essential qualifications and skills:
Qualified Social Worker with HCPC registration. Experience working as a Best Interest Assessor or in a similar role within adult social care. Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and its application in practice. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals. Leicester City Council's Adult Social Care team is seeking a qualified and experienced Best Interest Assessor (BIA) to join our Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Team on a 3-6 month contract. Youll play a key role in delivering assessments under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 to protect the rights and freedoms of vulnerable adults across the city and county.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake DoLS and Mental Capacity Assessments in line with statutory timescales
Coordinate the DoLS assessment process, including reviews
Support the BIA duty rota (1 day per week), responding to calls and emails
Provide expert advice and contribute to consistent, high-quality decision-making
Engage in multi-agency collaboration and offer support to BIA trainees
Ensure compliance with Article 5 ECHR, relevant legislation, and best practices
Attend office for meetings and as required (e.g. for IT or in-person reviews)
What You'll Need
Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, or related qualification (e.g., CQSW, DipSW)
Registered with Social Work England or relevant professional body
Hold a current Best Interest Assessor qualification and up-to-date refresher training
Practiced as a BIA within the last 2 years
Strong knowledge of Mental Capacity Act, DoLS, and Mental Health Act
Ability to assess complex needs and deliver accurate, timely reports
Excellent written, verbal, organisational, and IT skills
Must have a driving license and access to a vehicle - travel across Leicester and Leicestershire required (mileage claimable from office base)
Working Arrangement
Role will start office-based until IT equipment is provided
Majority of work will be home-based, including duty days
Occasional office attendance for meetings or case discussions
Assessment Expectations
2 new assessments per week (plus duty), or
3-5 assessments per week for reassessments or familiar cases
