Role Summary - What You Will Be Doing

As a Council Tax Account Officer, you will be a key point of contact for Council Tax billing and collection queries, providing clear and accurate advice to residents and customers.

You will manage a caseload of enquiries from initial contact through to summons stage, resolving issues end-to-end across billing and, where appropriate, recovery processes.

The role is focused on maintaining accurate customer accounts, minimising arrears, and maximising Council Tax income collection.


Billing & Account Maintenance
Core Duties

Process day-to-day Council Tax billing work, including occupations, vacations, and liability changes.

Apply and review discounts, exemptions, and disregards in line with legislation and council policy.

Issue bills, reminders, and statutory notices.

Balance accounts, arrange refunds, and progress write-offs where appropriate with full justification.

Use council systems (including MRI Revenues & Benefits where applicable) to update records and make liability decisions.

Interpret relevant legislation and case law to determine correct Council Tax liability.

Collate, scan, index, and accurately record correspondence and evidence within the electronic document management system.

Trace customers who have moved or absconded without paying and update accounts with new information.
