Hackney Council is seeking a committed and knowledgeable Benefits and Housing Needs Officer to join its dedicated team. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of residents, providing crucial support and delivering essential services across housing, homelessness prevention, benefits, and welfare.

Key Responsibilities:
Assess and process Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Discretionary Housing Payments, and welfare reform schemes

Provide housing advice and homelessness prevention support, including full assessments and the provision of temporary accommodation

Manage applications for the Housing Register, allocations, lettings, and social housing initiatives

Oversee temporary accommodation, including property procurement, contract performance, and financial management

Respond to and manage complaints, Member and MP enquiries, and Freedom of Information requests

Mentor colleagues and contribute to the development of high-performing, customer-focused services

Conduct customer interviews and home visits to verify information and provide support


What We're Looking For:
Substantial experience in one or more of the following:

Homelessness assessments and prevention

Temporary accommodation management

Housing supply and procurement

Lettings and housing allocations

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction schemes

Discretionary payments

Strong understanding of relevant legislation, case law, and local government practices

Excellent communication and negotiation skills with both internal and external stakeholders

Ability to manage complex workloads and competing priorities

Skilled in data management, financial monitoring, and use of IT systems

Committed to equality, confidentiality, and high standards of service
