Independent Reviewing Officer - Join Nottingham City Council
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) to join Nottingham City Council on an ongoing agency contract. About the Role
As an Independent Reviewing Officer, you will independently oversee care planning for Children in Care and Children with Disabilities, ensuring statutory requirements are met and that children's voices remain central to decision-making. You will provide robust challenge where required, promote best practice, and work collaboratively with professionals across partner agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Chair statutory reviews for Children in Care and Children with Disabilities in accordance with legislation and local procedures.
- Carry out the Independent Reviewing Officer role in line with the IRO Handbook 2010 and relevant legislation.
- Independently scrutinise care plans, ensuring they are appropriate, timely, and focused on achieving the best outcomes for children.
- Identify and challenge practice where necessary, using formal dispute resolution processes when appropriate.
- Produce accurate, high-quality records and statutory documentation.
- Monitor service performance and contribute to achieving local and national performance targets.
- Undertake regular audits in accordance with Nottingham City policies and procedures.
- Build effective working relationships with social workers, managers, partner agencies, and other professionals.
- Participate in supervision, team meetings, training, and continuous professional development.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working as an Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) is essential.
- Social Work England registration.
- Significant post-qualifying experience within Children's Services.
- Excellent knowledge of Children in Care legislation, safeguarding, and statutory review processes.
- Strong communication, analytical, report-writing, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to challenge professionally while maintaining positive multi-agency relationships.
- Full UK driving licence, access to a vehicle, and willingness to travel as required.
