Senior Practitioner (Learning Disabilities) - Southampton
Location: Southampton City Council (Civic Offices)
Rate: £32.00 - £35.00 per hour
Working Pattern: Hybrid - minimum 1 day per week office presence + face-to-face visits required
Contract: Locum
We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Practitioner - Learning Disabilities to join Southampton City Council. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled and confident Social Worker with strong knowledge of statutory responsibilities within Adult Social Care, particularly in Learning Disabilities services.
This role requires a practitioner who is already confident working within complex environments and who can support colleagues while managing a demanding caseload. Prior experience working within Southampton City Council and familiarity with internal systems and processes is highly desirable.
Please note this is not a remote-only role. The successful candidate will be required to attend face-to-face visits and meetings, with a minimum of one day per week office-based working at the Civic.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake Care Act Assessments, Reviews and Support Planning
Lead and chair Best Interest meetings and Section 42 Safeguarding planning meetings
Complete complex Mental Capacity Assessments and manage Best Interest decision pathways
Lead on Section 42 Safeguarding Enquiries
Provide guidance and support to less experienced colleagues
Undertake Court work, particularly relating to Community DoLS
Manage a complex caseload effectively and independently
Ensure accurate and timely recording in line with GDPR requirements
Work effectively within high-pressure environments and manage conflict appropriately
Candidate Requirements
Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England (SWE)
Significant experience within Learning Disabilities services
Strong understanding of the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and safeguarding frameworks
Experience supporting junior staff or acting in a senior/practice lead capacity
Ability to manage competing priorities and complex casework
Strong assessment, analytical and decision-making skills
Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
