Benefits Officer - Rugby

We are looking for a dedicated and customer-focused Financial Support & Benefits Officer to join our team. In this role, you will work directly with residents to help them manage their housing costs by providing guidance, financial support, and administering key support schemes.

The primary purpose of this role is to support clients in paying their rent and council tax through the provision of financial assistance, including the administration of Discretionary Financial Support Schemes, as well as offering information and signposting to wider financial inclusion services.
You will play a vital role in ensuring residents receive the correct financial support at the right time while maintaining compliance with national legislation and council policies.

Key Responsibilities
Housing Benefit & Council Tax Reduction
* Conduct interviews with residents to understand their financial circumstances and provide high-quality, tailored advice regarding benefit entitlements administered by both national and local government.
* Assess claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction in line with legislation, council policies, and procedures.
* Work with clients to resolve queries relating to their benefit claims.
* Carry out in-claim accuracy reviews to ensure the correct award is made to the correct individual at the appropriate time.
* Review or supersede previous decisions when new information is provided by clients.
* Refer cases of suspected irregularity to the Single Fraud Investigation Service (SFIS) and respond to requests for information or evidence, implementing investigation outcomes where required.
Discretionary Financial Support Schemes
* Work directly with residents to administer applications for discretionary financial support including:
o Discretionary Housing Payments
o Homelessness Prevention Grants and Loans
o Any additional schemes introduced nationally or locally.
* Assess claims for discretionary financial assistance in accordance with national legislation, council policies, and local procedures.

What We're Looking For
* Strong customer service and communication skills.
* Ability to assess financial information accurately and make evidence-based decisions.
* Knowledge of Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, or similar welfare systems (desirable).
* Experience working with vulnerable residents or providing financial advice/support (desirable).
* Ability to work within legislation, policies, and strict deadlines.
